Dr. Nuwan D P Gunawardane is the Director (IT) of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Sri Lanka. He is responsible for Supervising of collection, Analyzing and reporting of fisheries related data. Handle and supervision of All IT based applications (Vessel monitoring system, Electronic boat registration and licensing system, online scientific data collection system, electronic fish catch log data system, IT training and Awareness..etc,
N.D.P Gunawardane Completed his PhD in Zoology on 2023. He is also qualified in CIM, UK and posses a Post Graduate Diploma in Cybersecurity . Dr. Gunawardane has research experience on Fisheries Technology, Data and Co-management of Fisheries., Electronic Data for Fisheries and Indigenous Knowledge of Fishers. more than 20 Scientific papers are published on the findings of his research activities)
Currently he is holding the Vice Chair position of the Data collection and Statistics Working Party of Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)

I served as the research supervisor of Dr. Nuwan Gunawardane’s undergraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels. Nuwan is a hard-working and clear-thinking person, which is a pre-requisite for a professional career both in administrative and academic capacities. He has excellent analytical ability and problem-solving capacity. He has been instrumental in establishing many national important fisheries management tools in Sri Lanka such as high seas fisheries unit, and vessel monitoring systems. Apart from his professional achievements, he has artistic skills. He is a good team worker and gets on very well with his colleagues. He is a person with commendable social responsibility. I can easily set him as an example for the definition of the term ‘Gentleman’ in the Cambridge Dictionary, because he is a ‘man who is polite and behaves well toward other people.’
I found Nuwan Gunawardene to be a creative and individual with lot of potential at early stages of his career. I am sure Nuwan's innovative thinking, attention to detail and dependability will create value for any organization. Nuwan is an asset to our country and I am delighted having him Lassana Flora team
I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Nuwan, and came to know him as a truly valuable asset to our team at Department of Fisheries. He is honest, dependable, and incredibly hardworking. Beyond that, an impressive quick learner who is able to provide solutions for number of issues. He was in-charge of the implementation process of the Road map to revoke EU Fish Export Ban, under my guidance. Also establishment of the High Seas Fisheries Unit and also the initiation of Vessel Monitoring process in Department of Fisheries happened with his fully intervention.
